Purple Heart Pets

The Purple Heart Pet Award was created in 2014. Having lost far too many pets to serious illnesses, we needed to find a way to honor those that had already crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. As we recounted the stories of each of these beloved cats and dogs, a common theme emerged: the steadfast love of their owners and how brave they were in the face of adversity.

Inspired by the memories of those lost to us, we also wanted to find a way to celebrate the lives of our patients as they go through a serious illness or surgery.

Those who are no longer with us are considered honorary members. Without their lives, their stories, this idea would have never come to light.

Pets who are nominated will be honored with a small token of our love and affection. Their stories will be shared on our OVH Facebook page. Recipients will receive a gift box containing a purple bandana, an engraved purple heart-shaped dog or cat tag, and an honorary OVH Purple Heart Pet button for the family.

Our patients and their families are the foundation and daily inspiration for everything we do at OVH. We hope that sharing their stories will bring joy and inspiration to your day, too!

Meet Ginger – 11/25/2016

Ginger is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment for Lymphosarcoma. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers as she continues her journey.

She has been a phenomenal patient and continues to be an inspiration to entire OVH family!

Meet Yella – 10/24/2016

This handsome 13-year-old is our most recent OVH Purple Heart Pet.

Both he and his caregiver have been such an inspiration to us during his recovery from thyroid surgery!

Meet Midnight – 4/20/2016

Last week, we were thrilled to present the OVH Purple Heart Pet Award to this amazing girl!!

Midnight recently turned 17 years old and is the definition of how to fight adversity with grace and perseverance!

Diagnosed in 2013 with a rare form of skin cancer in her right ear, she has had extensive treatment at NCSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine. The white hair around her ear is due to numerous cycles of radiation therapy to keep the tumor from progressing.

With the addition of Hyperthyroidism and Chronic Renal Disease to her list of age-related concerns, radiation therapy is no longer a good option for her, and she is currently well managed with topical medications.

The extraordinary dedication of her caregiver and the beautiful connection they share has been such an inspiration to the doctors and staff at OVH. We’ve been proud to be a part of that partnership and have been so very blessed to know and love these two.

Meet Blossom – 9/18/2015

Earlier this week, Blossom had her final Chemotherapy visit and was awarded the Purple Heart!

This precious girl has been so brave during her 5-month long battle with Lymphosarcoma.

Blossom enjoyed some extra TLC from Ms. Darcy who snuggled with her while reading to help keep her comfortable and quiet during her lengthy infusion treatments.

Meet Sandy – 9/18/2015

Sandy has been in the hospital all week battling a life-threatening infection. She has been such a wonderful patient and has really touched us with her sweet demeanor and trusting nature!!

She was awarded the Purple Heart today for her bravery during this very difficult week.

We would very much appreciate your prayers for this precious girl.

Meet Onyx – 8/28/2015

We are sad to report that precious Onyx crossed the Rainbow Bridge yesterday morning.

She touched the hearts of the entire OVH family during her brave battle with a severe liver disease. Much to everyone’s heartache, she took a sudden turn for the worse on the same day she was awarded the distinction as the first feline recipient of the OVH Purple Heart Pet Award.

Rest in peace, little one. Gone, but not forgotten.

Meet Max – 5/13/2015

Sweet Max has been through a lot in the past six months, and we have been so blessed to be a part of that journey. He has touched everyone here with his gentle spirit and resilience in the face of some harrowing battles.

As a result of his most recent surgery, he has been left with a serious head tilt that may need weeks or months to improve.

Nonetheless, he is soldiering on in the loving care of his amazing family!!

Congratulations Max & Family!

Meet Quincy – 12/10/2014

Quincy is an adorably handsome and lovable senior Pug. Having survived several foreign body surgeries in his youth, he has certainly been through a lot over the years.

At 12 and 1/2 years of age, he is our most recent cancer survivor success story! He recently had surgery for a bleeding liver mass and once again sailed through his recovery!!

It was such a joy to see him on Friday, feeling strong, wagging his stubby tail, and giving lots of sweet kisses of gratitude!

We love you, Quincy!

Meet Team Spanky – 10/7/2014

Spanky was diagnosed approximately five months ago with an inoperable tumor on his shoulder. With a daunting regimen of medications, bandage changes and weekly chemotherapy, he continues to fight his battle with such dignity and courage. His gentle spirit has completely captured the hearts of the entire staff at OVH!

Spanky’s story was just the spark we needed to get this new program off the ground! We were so proud to honor him earlier this year as the first recipient of the OVH Purple Heart.

We treasure our weekly visits with Spanky and are so touched by the tireless love and devotion of his amazing family.
